PureCell™ Model 400

The facility incorporates green building standards, energy-efficient systems, and renewable energy sources to minimize its environmental footprint while maintaining exceptional performance.

Powering a New Era of Hyperscale Data Centers

In Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, a global digital infrastructure company is redefining sustainable data-center design. Led by PM Woo Chang Lee, the Ilsan Data Center integrates a 440kW hydrogen fuel cell system engineered to maximize renewable-energy adoption, increase energy efficiency, and support uninterrupted digital operations.

Fuel Cells: The Ideal Power Source for Data Stability

Data centers demand absolute power reliability — even momentary fluctuations can impact performance, uptime, and service quality. Fuel cells offer critical advantages over other renewable sources, delivering superior grid stability and faster power-source switching. For data-center environments where resilience is non-negotiable, this makes fuel cells the most essential and optimized renewable-energy solution.

Doosan’s fuel-cell technology, backed by a long history and extensive deployment track record, provides the proven stability needed for hyperscale computing environments.

Clean, Efficient Power Integrated into the City

The Ilsan Data Center operates on LNG supplied through existing city-gas pipelines, making fuel-cell power an efficient and practical choice for urban integration. The power produced is used as part of the site’s microgrid auxiliary power, reinforcing the center’s reliability and decreasing dependence on conventional grid infrastructure.

While this location does not yet utilize fuel-cell heat, the team sees strong potential for future applications — especially as the center expands. Opportunities such as cold-energy recovery through heat exchange are being actively explored.

Maximizing Land Use Through High Power Density

Data centers face strict limitations on land use, building coverage, and floor-area ratios. One of the biggest advantages of the fuel-cell system is its exceptionally high power-generation efficiency per unit area. This allowed the project team to fully optimize available land under the district-unit plan, aligning perfectly with the project’s construction goals.

By generating more power in less space, the fuel-cell system supports higher availability levels and enables seamless operation even during multi-source power reconfigurations or maintenance events — significantly minimizing downtime.

Scaling Toward the Future of Digital Infrastructure

As demand for data-center capacity continues to grow, fuel cells provide a scalable, stable, and clean solution well suited to dense urban environments. Their compact footprint and unmatched reliability make them an ideal renewable-energy source for data-center certification, operational efficiency, and sustainability targets.

Leading the Way in Renewable Energy for Data Centers

With its high efficiency, proven stability, and seamless integration into modern microgrid systems, the hydrogen fuel cell stands at the forefront of renewable-energy innovation for digital infrastructure. As Woo Chang Lee emphasizes, fuel cells are uniquely positioned to support the next generation of high-availability data centers — and he confidently recommends them as the leading renewable-energy technology for the industry.
