At Bobcat’s Gwinner manufacturing facility, innovation goes far beyond the equipment being built. While the team produces industry-leading skid-steers, track loaders, and Toolcat utility machines, the factory itself is powered by forward-thinking energy technology: HyAxiom fuel cells.

A Smarter, More Resilient Energy Source

Gwinner operates eleven stationary fuel-cell units, with three more supporting the Bismarck facility. These systems serve as a reliable supplement to grid power, ensuring seamless operation even when energy supply fluctuates. The fuel cells also deliver high-value thermal energy, feeding hot water back into the boiler system that drives Gwinner’s main paint line — a critical part of the plant’s production process.

Driving Decarbonization Without Compromise

For Site Operations Manager Dustin Shell, sustainability and performance go hand in hand. Powered by natural gas and emitting only a small amount of water vapor, the fuel cells help significantly reduce the facility’s carbon footprint. Partnering with HyAxiom gave the Bobcat team a solution that aligns with their long-term decarbonization goals without sacrificing operational output.

Low-Maintenance, High-Reliability Design

The HyAxiom units have delivered exceptional reliability since their installation. With full-time on-site support and systems that run 24/7 with little intervention, downtime has been virtually nonexistent. Their placement in unused, non-production areas means they support operations without taking up valuable manufacturing space.

Unlocking New Energy Value

Bismarck’s facility currently sells excess power generated by its fuel cells back to the grid, providing a meaningful operational and financial benefit. Gwinner — with its older grid infrastructure — is close behind. A project is already underway, and within the next year the team expects to leverage the same capability, maximizing the full potential and efficiency of their fuel-cell investment.
