PureCell™ Model 400

Multi-megawatt installation produces ~250,000 MWh of electricity annually, supplies power to over 50,000 households, and is the largest urban fuel cell installation providing power to 50,000 homes.

A Global Leader in Urban Clean Energy

In the heart of Busan’s Haeundae district — one of Korea’s most vibrant tourist destinations — Busan Green Energy operates a groundbreaking hydrogen fuel-cell power plant. Led by CEO Ryu Nam-ho, the facility delivers 30.8 megawatts of clean, reliable power, making it the largest urban fuel-cell power plant in the world.

Seamlessly Integrated into City Life

What sets this facility apart is not just its scale, but its location. Situated directly beside a residential apartment complex and across from Haeundae Paik Hospital, the plant is a model of true urban compatibility. Despite its proximity to homes, businesses, and public services, the plant operates without a single civil complaint, demonstrating how clean, quiet, and community-friendly fuel-cell technology can be.

Cleaner Air and Smarter Energy for Busan

Fuel-cell power generation offers unique environmental benefits. During operation, the system filters pollutants in the air, actively helping reduce particulate matter in the surrounding atmosphere. At the same time, it captures the thermal energy produced during power generation, delivering both heat and electricity with exceptional efficiency — an ideal solution for densely populated urban areas.

Choosing Proven Technology for Reliable Operation

To meet the demands of a large-scale, city-center installation, the plant relies on PAFC (Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cell) technology from Doosan Fuel Cell. Known for its stability, heat-supply capability, and proven commercial performance, PAFC provides the reliability needed for continuous year-round operation.

Delivering Energy to the Community

The plant is fueled by natural gas supplied through existing city pipelines. Electricity generated onsite is sold directly to KEPCO through a fully automated substation, supporting Korea’s broader energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, the thermal energy produced is delivered to residents of Haeundae’s Green City district, maximizing efficiency and delivering real value to the local community.

A Blueprint for the Future of Urban Power

Busan Green Energy stands as a powerful example of how cities can embrace clean, decentralized energy without compromising comfort, safety, or quality of life. By integrating fuel-cell technology directly into the urban environment, the plant is helping shape a more sustainable, more resilient future for Busan — and setting a global benchmark for urban clean-energy innovation.
